Take an ATV Trip Through Gatlinburg (And More!)

Gatlinburg, TN, is THE mountain-top town of the Tennessee Appalachians. It is pure hills, ridges and foliage out here; and our roadways to Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, Cosby and Cherokee, NC, are made for Autumn road trips and ambience unforgettable. Beyond that, the aforementioned nearby communities have a number of awesome roads to take a vehicle adventure on. In this article, we’ll list some of the best roads we like to recommend to our customers for a road trip to see the fall colors and enjoy the season in the Smokies.

1. Newfound Gap to Cherokee, NC.

This is highway US-441 that connects Gatlinburg to Cherokee across the National Park. This is THE scenic drive of all scenic drives in East Tennessee. This one 70-minute roadway features unquestionably the best nature views of our area along with many hiking trails, two visitors’ centers, and a very high chance of seeing major wildlife like bears, deer or elk. No sightseeing visit in the Smokies is complete without a trip through Newfound Gap.

2. Highway 321 to Cosby, TN.

321 is our other main road through the city of Gatlinburg and connects through the community of Pittman Center to Cosby, TN. As you drive from Gatlinburg on 321, the scenery becomes less commercial and developed and becomes a lot, lot, lot more natural and thick with foliage, as well as more rustic countryside stops, hills and, eventually, some orchards. The Arts and Crafts Community connects from Highway 321 as well.

3. Wears Valley Road to Townsend, TN.

This 45-50 minute roadway is the major connection from the center of Pigeon Forge (or near enough) to Townsend, TN, with a number of different nature scenes and interesting sights along the way. Between the two is the small but very memorable community of Wears Valley with a concentrated shopping and dining center and unrivaled views of distant mountains “protecting” the plains and lowlands all around. Another 15-20 minutes of twists, turns and contrasts later, you will arrive in Townsend, TN.

4. Chapman Highway to Knoxville, TN.

Connecting downtown Sevierville, TN to the big city of East Tennessee is Chapman Highway. It is a 50-60 minute drive (occasionally less, somehow) between the two cities and a lot to stop and see along the way. Unlike the other entries on this list, this drive isn’t so much about seeing nature as it is checking out some really cool shops, stops, restaurants and other places of interests nearby, but will be one heck of a drive in a UTV for visitors all the same.

5. The Arts and Crafts Community Loop Road.

Connecting from the aforementioned Highway 321 above, the Arts and Crafts Community Loop Road is as deep and magical into the Gatlinburg foliage and Appalachian cultural spirit as it gets around here. This is a potentially shorter road to take, but makes up for it with a number of scenic drives branching off from it along the way. This is also a great backroad solution for avoiding traffic as the road can connect to Pigeon Forge and Sevierville with no difficult driving or confusing directions along the way. A personal favorite for Autumn and Winter.
